Op 20 augustus 1972 vond in Los Angeles een historisch benefietconcert plaats ter herdenking van de Watts-rellen zeven jaar eerder. Platenlabel Stax Records bracht zijn grootste artiesten samen, waaronder Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers en Rufus Thomas, voor een evenement dat een krachtig muzikaal en cultureel statement maakte. Meer dan 100.000 mensen waren getuige van optredens die de Afro-Amerikaanse gemeenschap vierden, met als hoogtepunt de iconische 'I Am Somebody'-toespraak van dominee Jesse Jackson.
